New Single 'Sweet Home Mulga Bore' Out Now
(Thursday 6 March) Today, Akaye glam-rockers Mulga Bore Hard Rock share their exhilarating second single, “Sweet Home Mulga Bore”, out now via Community Music. Following their debut single "Young Men" (Younga Barla Mapa), the band’s new release is a heartfelt and energetic tribute to family, culture and the emotional pull of home.
Reimagining a traditional country ballad, originally written by their uncle, Akaye elder Dave Bird, “Sweet Home Mulga Bore” was a song that lead singer Alvin and his family grew up singing. Years later in the studio, the band reimagined the track with a hard rock twist, infusing their signature punchy style while keeping the heart and soul of the original melody intact. Spanning generations, the song paints a vivid picture of growing up in Akaye, surrounded by family and the rich imagery of animals, food and hunting. It also reflects the band's cherished memories of life on the road, sharing the stories of Mulga Bore with the world.
Mulga Bore Hard Rock’s singer Alvin shares on the single: “This sound always reminds me of growing up in the bush with all our families coming together. I see all the bush tucker, goanna, kangaroo, bush tomatoes, bush banana and bush honey from the tree and honey ants. We found some old footage from our parents days before most of us were born. They are doing the same thing then as we do now, hunting and eating together to be healthy. It also reminds me of all the amazing times we have been on the road playing around Australia and how lucky we are to share our story from Mulga Bore to the world.”
“I am always writing new songs and thinking of new lyrics. It makes me happy. We have picked up the music bug from our Uncles, Aunties, Mum and Dad and we have always played, it’s in our blood. The next generation are coming up now and they are starting to play these old songs too and my songs so the story keeps going.”
Today’s single follows the band’s debut “Young Men”, which saw widespread love from NT News, Rolling Stone Australia, ABC Indigenous and more, alongside rotation adds from FBi Radio, RTRfm, 2SER and rage. Next up, the band will perform at Collingwood institution The Tote on Thursday 6 March, Port Fairy Folk Festival on Friday 7 March and Meredith’s Golden Plains on Saturday 8 March, setting the stage for PJ Harvey, Fontaines D.C. and more.
Mulga Bore Hard Rock bring a uniquely authentic voice to the Australian rock scene, seamlessly blending their cultural heritage with a dynamic sound that transcends their small desert community. Comprised of Thunder Child (Alvin Manfong - vocals/guitar), Desert Demon (Kirklen Bird - bass/vocals), Desert Dingo (Aiden Manfong - drums), Queen of Hearts (Niara Tilmouth - vocals/tambourine), Star Boy (Tryell Bird - guitar/vocals) and Black Diamond (Talvin Bird - bass); a group of teenagers aged 15 to 20 years old. Defying any expectations around their age, the six-piece commanded the stage when they were invited to support rock legends KISS at their final Australian tour date—an extraordinary achievement for a band with no music released at the time. Their performance made such an impact that KISS personally praised them, marking a pivotal milestone early on their journey. Recently, the band captured the hearts of Australia’s music industry at Bigsound, where they were named one of Double J's “finest acts” from the event, and at SXSW Sydney, receiving widespread acclaim from outlets including The AU Review, NME, Backseat Mafia and The Underground Stage.
